The date palm (botanical name phoenix dactylifera) belongs to the class Monocotyledons and the family Palm. It has provided mankind with food and building materials since the dawn of time and can be found from the Canary Islands across northern Africa to the Middle East ; from India and Pakistan to south-west Asia. Experts believe that the date palm has been cultivated since about 6000BC, and every part of the tree has its uses. The wood and leaves provide timber and fabric for houses and fences. The leaves are used for making ropes, cord, baskets, crates and furniture. Bases of the leaves and the fruit stalks are used as fuel, and the fruit yields food products such as date vinegar, date chutney or sweet pickle, date paste for bakery products and additional flavoring for oranges, bananas and almonds. Even the tree's terminal buds make tasty additions to vegetable salads. According to the World Food and Agricultural Organization, there are 90 million date palms in the world and each tree can grow for more than 100 years. 64 million of these trees are grown in Arab countries, which produce 2 million tons of dates between them each year.

Stages of Growth
  • Hababik : Size of the fruit is small (kernel size) having a circular shape.
  • Kamry : Size is bigger (as size of an olive) having green color.
  • Baser : The fruit reaches it's final size and the color is changed to yellow or red according to species.
  • Rutub : It is the stage at which the Baser red and yellow fruit is converted to black or deep brown color.
  • Tamer: The final stage of growth, the fruit is ripened.

Dates are valuable as medicine for their tonic effect. It is easily digested; they are very useful for supplying energy and repairing waste. Milk in which clean and fresh dates have been boiled is a very nourishing and restorative drink to children and adults alike, especially during convalescence. The nicotinic content in dates is an excellent remedy for intestinal disturbances. Liberal use of dates keeps in check the growth of pathological organisms and helps to establish a colony of friendly bacteria in the intestines.

The date is a laxative food. It is highly beneficial in the treatment of constipation as the roughage provided by it stimulates sluggish bowels. They should be immersed in water at night and taken after making them into fine syrup the next morning to secure laxative effect.
